China Unicom to Sell Unicom Vsens to China Telecom, Form New Procurement Company
September 12, 2008
It is reported that China Unicom decided to sell its CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) mobile phone procurement and distribution company Unicom Vsens Telecommunications Technology, along with its CDMA business, to China Telecom and start a new company in charge of terminal procurement in the future, according to Interfax China.

As well as all Vsens provincial units and China Unicom's Macao subsidiary, about half of the 100 employees at the Vsens headquarters will be transferred to China Telecom, expected to be merged with China Telecom's own PHS (Personal Handy-phone System) terminal procurement department. In 2007, CDMA phones sold through Unicom Vsens totaled 9.63 million units, representing 95.5% of all CDMA phones sold in China, according to the Interfax China report.

China Unicom will start a new procurement company based on the remaining Vsens employees and some China Netcom staff. The new company is tentatively named Hua Kai.
